Apply for licensing
Before applying to become licensed, you should read the licensing competencies within the LBP Rules. These will identify the type of residential building work you will need to show to become licensed.
The easiest way to apply to become an LBP is to apply online(external link)
For most classes of licensing, there are three pathways to apply to become an LBP:

Making an application
There are 6 steps to the licence application process:
- Work out what type of application you need to make – the types of application are described in full below.
- If you are applying online, set up your access to the LBP portal (if you do not already have access). To set up your access, you will need either a RealMe®, Microsoft® or Google® account.
- Provide Information – tell us about yourself and your qualifications (and experience if it is a Standard application).
- Pre-assessment – check to see if you’re ready.
- Certify and pay – submit your application.
- Assessment – an assessor will contact you to discuss your application.

Applying for a licence in the portal
The Registrar needs detailed information about you and your qualifications / experience before considering your licence application, so don’t feel like you have to complete your application in one sitting. We encourage you to commence your application when you feel you’re nearly ready to become licensed and to continue your application over time. Your information will be saved until you are ready to complete and submit your application.
Getting started on your application will assist you to identify any gaps you need to address in preparation for assessment.
Types of application

Streamlined application (Qualified)
If you hold a recognised New Zealand qualification in the licensing class that you are applying for, you can use a streamlined application. You may apply for any licence type in this way, except for a Design licence.

Standard application
If you have experience in the licensing class you are applying for, or are applying for a Design licence, use a standard application. You can also use a standard application if you do not hold a recognised qualification.

Australian licence holders
If you hold an Australian State design or trade-related licence, you may be able to apply for a New Zealand licence under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997.

Paper-based applications
If you can't complete an application online, you can make a paper-based application instead.
